What is the LITRE Technology Practices Directory?

The LITRE Technology Practices Directory is a fully-searchable, online database that lists innovative technology-enhanced teaching practices by faculty. Faculty create an account in the directory, list one or more courses they teach, then outline how they use specific technologies in those courses (e.g., GIS/GPS, lab machinery, databases, Powerpoint, blogs, Vista, WebAssign, Wolfware, email, etc.).

Who can participate and use the directory?

All Faculty at NC State are invited to submit their technology-enhanced teaching practices to the directory. Anyone with a Unity ID can access and view directory entries. Faculty, however, may choose to limit access of their information to LITRE and themselves.

Why should I participate?

Document your use of learning technologies.

Across campus, innovative teaching is tied to reappointment, promotion, and tenure decisions that affect all faculty. Too often, innovative teaching practices go unnoticed and can be difficult to document with end-of-semester course evaluations and password-protected faculty Web sites (Wolfware, Vista, etc.). This directory provides faculty with a means to publicly document their usage of technologies in teaching. Since the directory is fully searchable by name, faculty can return a complete listing of their teaching with technology entries and print the file for inclusion in a dossier or other documentation for promotion. Faculty can regularly update and edit their entries to maintain an active record of teaching with technology online.

Facilitate peer collaboration.

Another critical reason for participation is to facilitate peer to peer collaboration. With the search feature, faculty can quickly determine which colleagues in their department or college are using a certain software program and how they are using it. Faculty can also make connections with colleagues in other colleges who they do not regularly meet in their work but whose technology projects might be of interest to them. Faculty can contact their peers with questions or offers to collaborate on projects and grants that employ certain technologies. We envision that this database will enable faculty, who may not realize others have similar interests, to collaborate, to provide inspiration to each other, and to generate new research projects.

Enhance University Support of learning technologies.

Certain campus groups such as the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (FCTL), DELTA, ITD, and the LITRE Advisory Board, may also use the directory to organize learning communities or develop specialized workshops around given tools and technology-enhanced teaching activities.

Another way the information will help the university is by improving the understanding of technology use across the university. LITRE will use the directory to determine the general scope of technology used in campus classrooms and online and help answer questions like "What tools are being used?";" How widely?"; "For what purposes?"; "Do faculty find them useful?

How will my information be used?

The directory will serve multiple audiences. Information submitted to the database will be available online to anyone in the NC State community with a Unity ID. Entries can be printed by faculty for their own use in teaching documentation, and searched by peers and on-campus support groups to help locate individuals who show an interest in teaching with certain technologies. Deans and department heads can use the directory to compile a report of innovative teaching with technology within their college or department. Policy and decision makers will also be able to use this information to guide future directions of technology use. Students can use the directory to identify the technology-enhanced teaching practices that faculty employ before registering for their courses. LITRE will use the database in its efforts to determine how technology impacts student learning.

Who has endorsed the directory?

The directory is a joint project of LITRE, University Planning and Analysis, the Instructional Technology program in the College of Education, the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning, and DELTA.
