ClassTech: A Pilot Classroom Project

In fall 2002 the division of Facilities Planning and Design, in conjunction with many other campus units, completed new design standards for classroom technology. These standards established five levels of classroom-technology design and specified the equipment to be available at each level. Revision of these standards is ongoing.

In early spring 2003, the Classroom Environment Committee recommended a pilot project to help NC State get started bringing its classrooms up to the new standards. Then-interim provost Robert Barnhardt approved this pilot project, allocating $196,000 for FY 2003, plus additional funding for installation in FY 2004, and money for maintenance in subsequent years. The pilot project was known as ClassTech.

Today, the number of ClassTech designed classrooms has increased from 0 in Fall 2003, to 12 in spring 2004, to 20 in fall 2004, to 54 in fall 2005 and to 70 by spring 2007. It is anticipated that the number of ClassTech rooms will keep increasing in the future.

Assessment Strategies

Faculty and student surveys, usage logs, interviews with faculty and IT support staff were assessment methods used from spring 2004 through spring 2005. Principal Investigators provided annual reports for 2004-2005 and 2005-2006. Additionally, based on 2004-2005 LITRE findings and endorsed by the LITRE Advisory Board, another observational study of the ClassTech Project was conducted during 2005-2006.
