The LITRE grant will be used to develop part of a computational chemistry laboratory course to initially be taken by sophomore, BS chemistry students. The aim of this course is to introduce students to the forces that hold molecules and systems of molecules together in a visual way. Background material will be written for each laboratory so that students can put that knowledge to use with software in order to discover and explain what occurs when atoms are placed in various forcefields. In developing a physical framework of how energy relates to the geometrical arrangement of atoms in space, this course will introduce students to the more quantitative aspects of the chemical sciences and provide a good foundation for their latter two years of coursework. Another long term goal is to return to the same software and to solve more sophisticated problem sets in later years.
