The goal of this project is to fully integrate Classroom Performance System (CPS) technology and subsequently improve student monitoring, performance, and pedagogy in our educational psychology courses. CPS is an easy-to-use, response system that produces immediate individual and group feedback to questions posed to students. Students submit answers (or opinions) on hand-held response pads and this information is compiled and presented immediately in summary form after all responses are given. We believe the CPS units can enhance not only student learning through the use of immediate feedback but also our teaching as we can adapt instruction in real-time. These devices improve the timing of instruction in that we no longer need a week delay after giving a written assessment to uncover the level of mastery obtained by our students. During the project we plan to compare CPS-based classrooms with non CPS-based classrooms on learning-based and attitudinal outcomes in addition to examining changes within students related to CPS use over extended periods of time. We view this project as having the potential the create a model classroom environment that utilizes multiple sources of technology (e.g., CPS, Powerpoint, internet, video) and can be applied across disciplines.
