This project aims to disseminate electronic peer review across the NCSU campus. This will be done in two ways: (1) by supporting instructors who are interested in using the proposer's PG system in their classes, and (2) by properly integrating PG's authentication mechanism with Kerberos authentication, providing secure authentication to all NCSU users.
Peer review holds important advantages for students, both as assessors and as assessees. As assessors, they spend time reviewing, summarizing, diagnosing misconceived knowledge, and considering deviations from the ideal. As assessees, they write for an audience where they have the burden of making themselves understood, rather than relying on an expert grader to decipher their intentions. Their peers are likely to give them more feedback than they would receive from an overworked TA or an instructor. The whole experience encourages students to invest more thought and effort into their work. A number of studies of peer evaluation have found that students felt they were more critical and found the work more challenging.
Thus far, six NCSU instructors from fields ranging from chemical engineering to physical education to zoology have agreed to use PG in their classes. We are seeking more participants, and will offer them considerable support to bring peer review to their classes.
