Three faculty in the Department of Zoology will utilize Palm handheld devices with wireless Internet access in four courses to promote student participation and learning in the classroom. In one type of usage, students will participate in “instant polling” or brief, interactive exercises with student responses summarily sent to a web site and projected on the classroom screen for discussion. A second type of exercise will require students to locate and access journal articles or Internet resources wirelessly during class, then post their notes on these sources to a shared class website for collaborative use and class discussion. Faculty involved in the project will use multiple data sources to determine if the instructional strategies led to attainment of the project objectives: enhancement of active learning, collaborative learning, and critical thinking.
